Asteraceae <Astereae> Erigeron <Phalacroloma> allisonii (strigosus var. calcicola)
Erigeron allisonii Poindexter, Keener & Noyes
ALI: no HAB: 12, ==, E, 6 ABU: g5?, s2?, -2
This species was recently elevated by Weakley et al. 2018) from variety rank (= E. strigosus var. calcicola J. Allison). It is a slender perennial that has been recently described from limestone glades in c. Miss., n. Ala., nw. Ga. and c. Tenn., where it is locally abundant (Allison & Stephens 2001, Campbell & Seymour 2012; W.). It is locally abundant in Tenn. (D. Estes, pers. comm.). E. allisonii differs in its distinct stoloniferous offsets that may perenniate; typical strigosus is annual or perhaps biennial. It also tends to be shorter and inflorescences are narrower with more compact ascending branches (ca. 1-5 cm wide versus 5-10 cm). There is a coll. of allisonii from WARR (G.P. Johnson #1242 at APSU), recently determined by Brock (2020).This coll. was reported from 2.1 km NW of US 68 at intersection with US 231 [probably about 36.9858, -86.4903]; see also Johnson (1981). There are also interesting plants in NELS at the grassland remnant on US 150 ca. 1 km SE of the Bluegrass Parkway; some of these plants have small or weak basal offsets, but do not seem to be typical allisonii. [In western states, there are several perennial species of Erigeron, including E. karvinskianus DC., which has been widely grown in rock gardens or patios of western Europe, but apparently is not hardy in most of eastern North America,]
