This twining vine is pantropical and widespread on lowlands in warmer regions of southeastern and east coastal states. Although the species is locally common in wetlands of western Ky.,it is largely unknown in the Ohio Rv. watershed upstream of the Shawnee Hills. However, there is a disjunct population in se Ind. (M. Homoya, pers. comm.) and a dubious old record from sw Ohio (D. Boone, pers. comm.).
