Mapping here is provisional; several records may be transferred to brevisepalus; these taxa appear to have similar ranges and habitats within Ky. Distinction from brevisepalus, which appears to be more common in Ky., and from pallidus (a more western relative) has often been difficult. P. canescens may be regarded as a large-flowered, broad-leaved variant in this group, with more restriction to relatively cool mesic sites, concentrated in the Appalachians but perhaps extending west into more hilly parts of the Interior Low Plateaus. Compared to brevisepalus (F, FNA 17), corollas of canescens are larger (ca. 2-3 cm long versus 1.5-2.5 cm), with longer tubes (ca. 8-10 mm versus 5-8 mm) that are abruptly enlarged into the throat (versus gradually tapering); and its sepals are mostly 3.5-5.5 mm (versus 2-3.5 mm), lanceolate with L/W ca. 2.2-3.5 (versus ovate with L/W ca. 1.6-2.2) equalling or exceeding the capsule at maturity (versus equalling). Leaves are larger on average, but with much overlap (FNA 17): ca. 3-17 x 1-4 cm (versus 3-9 x 1-3 cm). Plants are taller on average (FNA 17): ca. 3-8 dm (versus 2-6 dm ).
