This highly dissected, bipinnate variant is relatively frequent within northeastern regions, and locally frequent in the central Appalachians (W). However, it is much less common than var. obliquum in the Ohio Valley, and rare to absent on the southeastern Coastal Plain (W). Its taxonomic status has been uncertain, between distinct species and environmental form.
