Trilliaceae [Melanthiaceae, Liliaceae] Trillium <Phyllantherum> luteum (cuneatum var. l.)
Trillium luteum (Muhl.) Harbison
ALI: no HAB: 5, n/a, D, 1 ABU: g7, s7, -3
This is largely restricted to base-rich soils from the southern Appalachians to the southern Cumberland Plateau and adjacent hills. There has been some confusion with viride, within which Gl included luteum and cuneatum as varieties; see also notes under cuneatum. The disjunct coll. from CLAR (EKY) is verified but it is an atypically small plant; it was found mixed with sessile near old buildings where past planting is possible. T. luteum is close to cuneatum but differs in its yellow petals (versus maroon to greenish-brown), usually lemon-scented (versus wet- dogged), and leaves mostly silver and green (versus silver and green/brown maculate).
