This subquafic species is widespread in sluggish streams and wetlands across the Northerh Hemisphere, but less common at eutrophic sites.. In Ky. all plants may be referred to var. americana (DC.) Fern. & Grisc.; typical plants are European (F). However, this distinction is not followed in recent treatments.
