This tetraploid (2n = 48) is widespread across southeastern states in various habitats, extending further west into the southern Great Plains than the other two species of this genus. Within Ky. it is especially common along the crests of riverbanks, between riparian woods and the open scoured zones. It is also locally abundant along smaller streams and in thin woods on rocky slopes, especially with base-rich soils.
