Violaceae Viola <Boreali-Americanae> communis f. priceana (+ "papilionacea" forma albiflora)
Viola communis f. priceana (Pollard) H.E.Ballard
ALI: no HAB: s-10,7, ::, D, 4? ABU: g8?, s6?, 2
Treatment here is tentative; varied other whitish or grayish flowered forms of communis could be included as well as typical priceana. Ballard et al. (2023) described it as follows: "same as the species, but corolla white or very pale violet with dense coalescing nectar-guide lines forming a conspicuously contrasting broad blue, blue-gray, or purple eyespot around the throat." Such plants are sometimes cultivated in eastern North America, but often seem to originate from native plants. They may deserve some recognition, but not full species status. Some authors (e.g. Sm) have indicated that priceana sensu stricto (or "Confederate Violet"), which has grayish petals with blue veins converging in the center, is distinct from simple albinos and deserves special attention. V. priceana was originally described from yards in Bowling Green, Ky. (WARR), and potential records of native plants are known from elsewhere in western or central Ky.: CALL (MUR); CASE (EKY); HICK (MUR); TRIG (DHL) and elsewhere (M). It has also been considered native in Ark., Ill., Tenn., W.Va., Pa., Ga., S.C. and N.C. However, priceana has been widely cultivated in eastern states, often spreading into mowed areas.
