This widespread North American winter-annual is polyploid (2n = 32, 64) and relatively variable (Y, FNA 7). It is reported from varied wetland or riparian habitats, but it may be relatively infrequent on eutrophic soils, where perhaps outcompeted. F stated: "An excellent substitute for watercress." Although often confused with other species, hybrids are not documented.
