This northeastern tree is not common but it is widely scattered across Ky. It may have increased after settlement; the earliest record appears to be from Crandall (1876; see also M). Included here as open dots are the historical data of Gm (1913). The species appears to have remained relatively infrequent even during 1910-1940 (Gm, B). There is an oral history among some foresters that increase occurred during salvage of Castanea dentata after the chestnut blight. Hybrids can be expected with tremuloides, alba and perhaps X canescens (FNA 7); 2n = 38 in each species, in general, except that tremuloides can also have 2n = 57 or 76. All three species spread by suckering roots, and young sprouts form leaves that are distinct from those on older stems. Hybrids can be difficult to recognize; see FNA 7 for details.
