Apiaceae <Api-Apieae> Anethum graveolens
Anethum graveolens L.
ALI: EU HAB: n/a, n/a, n/a, n/a ABU: n/a, n/a, 0
This culinary herb (dill) is an annual from southern Europe that is widely cultivated, and escapes have been reported across much of North America. In Ky. there is a coll. ROWA (MDKY), but it may not be truly naturalized. [A coll. from BULL (LO) was redet. at Ptilimnium costatum.] Other culinary herbs from Europe that are more or less closely related to Anethum are also widely cultivated but with no confirmed records of escapes in Ky. (M): the biennials Apium graveolens L. (celery), Petroselenium crispum (Miller) Mansf. (parsley), and the annuals Coriandrum sativum L. (coriander), Ammi majus L. (bishops weed) and Visnaga daucoides Gaertn. (khella). The medicinal effects and aromatic nature of these plants (with "graveolens" meaing strong-smelling) is due to derivatives of phthalides (butylphthalide, sedanolide), phenyl propenes (apiole, dillapiole), coumarins (umbelliferone) and other compounds (Muhammed & Al-Khesraji 2021). See also notes on "persicarin" under Oenanthe javanica.
