This is largely restricted to non-calcareous cliffs in the Appalachians, Shawnee Hills and Ozarks. It is a polyploid (2n = 144) derived from hybridization of montanum and rhizophyllum. Hybrids of pinnatifidum with montanum, platyneuron or other species are occasionally found, and locally frequent in some cases.
