Orchidaceae <Calypsoeae> Aplectrum hyemale
Aplectrum hyemale (Muhl. ex Willd.) Torr.
ALI: no HAB: 5,11,7, n/a, D?, 2 ABU: g9, s9, -2
This is widespread in north-central states and adjacent Canada east of the Rockies. Although there are many records from Ky., the species generally occurs in patches of just 1-10 plants. A. hyemale may be most common mesic to submesic woods on moderately base-rich fertile soil, but it is rare ro absent in most of the Bluegrass region and other landscapes with a long history of agricultural disturbance. V. Holmgren (pers.comm.) established several plants at her garden in Lexington (FAYE), but after a few years chipmunks consumed them all.
