In Ky. this Southern Appalachian tetraploid (2n = 36) is restricted to seasonally xeric sandy soils of the Appalachian Cliff Section, plus a few localities in the southern Knobs (also Hazel Dell in PULA) and Cumberland Mts. It often forms large rhizomatous colonies, but flowers little except after fire or other disturbance. A common associate is Pityopsis graminifolia.
