This small shrub of varied open habitats is widely distributed across northeastern regions. In Ky. it is known only from a few sites on banks of the Rockcastle Rv. and the Big South Fk. of Cumberland Rv., and it also occurs nearby in Tenn. There are no other verified records from the whole Ohio Valley downstream from the Allegheny Mts. in W.Va. (K). The species was listed by McMurtrie (1819) for the Louisville area (JEFF), but that record remains highly dubious;
