Ranunculaceae <Delphinieae> Consolida [Delphinium] ajacis (ambigua)
Consolida ajacis (L.) Schur
ALI: EU HAB: G-10,7, n/a, D, 4 ABU: n/a, n/a, 4
This old ornamental ("garden larkspur") has become locally common in pastures and roadsides for over a century (Gm, M), especially in the Bluegrass region. Although DNA-based evidence indicates that Consolida (plus Aconitella) is nested within the traditional concept of Delphinium, it appears to be a monophyletic group that deserves at least subgenus status (Xiang et al. 2017). Consolida differs in several profound characters (FNA 3): annuals (versus perennial); pistil 1 (versus 3-5); petals 2 (versus 4), connate (versus distinct).
