Fabaceae <F-Desmodieae> Kummerowia [Lespedeza] striata
Kummerowia striata (Thunb.) Schindl.
ALI: AS HAB: S-10,12,9?, ::::, D?, 6 ABU: n/a, n/a, 6
This annual has been widely sown for at least a century as "Japanese" clover or bush-clover, and it is abundantly naturalized in southeastern states. After early trials, Gm (1902) noted that the colder climate of n. Ky. appeared to limit the success of this species there, but it had already become "especially common" in some western counties (HICK, HOPK, LOGA). K. striata is a short plant that can prosper where mowed down to 5-10 cm in height. It is locally dominant in urban lawns on relatively dry infertile clayey soils, especially where compacted or where excavated subsoil is exposed.
