Violaceae Viola <Boreali-Americanae> nephrophylla ("pratincola")
Viola nephrophylla Greene
ALI: no HAB: n/a, n/a, n/a, n/a ABU: n/a, n/a, 0
This is a widespread northern and western species of base-rich wetlands (F, K, PL), that has been reported near Ky in s. Mo. (Ladd & Thomas 2015), s. Ill. (ML), c. Ind. (Russell 1965), s. Ohio (Greene Co., from pers. comm. with D. Boone) and s. W.Va. (HW+). However, some of these reports may be doubted; those from s . Ill. have been mostly determined as V. pratincola Greene, which was also listed for Ky. by BA but with no details. Although pratincola now appears to be a distinct midwestern species, absent east of the Mississippi Rv. (Ballard et al. 2023), the name has been considered a synonym of nephrophylla by McKinney (1992), and it has also been used for plants that appear at least transitional to sororia, communis (F; Correll & Johnston 1970) or affinis (Gil-ad 1997, 1998). V. nephrophylla has the following distinctive characters (H. Ballard, in prep.): spurred pet densely bearded (as in latiuscula); lowest sepals oblong to ovate, with obtuse to rounded apex; auricles short and rounded; lower surface of lf blades commonly purple-tinged (as in latiuscula).
