This distinct species (2n = 60) is widespread in eastern North America, except on the southeastern Coastal Plain. However, it is restricted to wet acid soils and concentrated in Appalachian regions; see notes on habitat under scabrata. In Ky. disjunct western records are confirmed: from BOON (DOV), R. Naczi #8019 (DOV) from a seep along Gunpowder Creek; and from HARD (EKY; Cranfill 1991). A record from "High Bridge" in JESS (Anderson 1924) remains dubious.
