Mapping here is provisional. These typical Eurasian plants of cool temperate to boreal regions generally appears distinct from native P. lanceolata, but the potential for intergradation need to be investigated. In more northern states and Canada, typical vulgaris often occurs in lawns, being able to withstand repeated mowing. Compared to lanceolata, it has relatively small, ovate (versus lanceolate) leaves; those at mid-stem are typically ca. 2-4 cm long (versus 4-10 cm) and ca. 1-2 cm wide (versus 1.5-4 cm); l/w is ca. 1.5-2.5 (versus 2.5-3.5). However, these differences are not always clearcut. Its tolerance of grazing is exemplified by the research of Gillham (1955): "Agrostis and Festuca are the most widespread conspicuous among the dicotyledons are Ranunculus corniculatus and Prunella vulgaris. Practically all plants in this category are capable of making erect growth when protected from grazing but are normally of creeping habit in the conditions obtaining at present on the grazed islands."
