Caryophyllaceae <Silenoideae> Atocion [Silene] armeria
Atocion armeria (L.) Raf.
ALI: EU HAB: n/a, n/a, n/a, n/a ABU: n/a, n/a, 0
This is often cultivated and has become somewhat weedy in northeastern and northwestern regions, but it remains rare to absent in southeastern states. There have been a few reports from Ky., from C.S. Rafinesque (under various synonyms) to FNA 5, but colls. have not been located (M). See R.K. Rabeler in Y for review of generic treatment. Atocion differs from Silene as follows (W): calyx narrowly funnelform, dilated above the midpoint (versus tubular or broadened below the middle); petals pink (versus white or pink); stem with glutinous zones on upper internodes (versus generally lacking glutinous zones); plants glabrous (versus glabrous or pubescens). The "long-tubular, clavate calyx enclosing the unusually long carpophore" helps to distinguish A. armeria (FNA 5).
