Mapping is tentative. This is an easily overlooked but widespread taxon of southeastern states. It may deserve species status, but it can be difficult to separate from pensylvanica or emmonsii or albicans, appearing intermediate in some cases. There has also been some confusion in nomenclature; "var. muhlenbergii" has been attached to three species. According to W, var. australis differs from typical typical albicans only as follows: plants with conspicuously long rhizomes, forming clonal patches (versus cespitose). Colls. from CALL (BEREA), HARD (DHL, KY), MCRE (KY) and TRIG (GA) are included here, but the MCRE identification has been doubted by R.F. Naczi and A.A. Reznicek. Further analysis is needed. The name C. physorhyncha Lieb. ex Steud. has been misapplied to these plants by several previous authors (W).
