Polygonaceae <Polygoneae> Paragonum [Polygonum*, Fallopia] ciliinode
Paragonum ciliinode (Michx.)
ALI: no HAB: 1,12?, n/a, D?, 4 ABU: g9?, s2?, -4
This diploid (2n = ?20, 22) perennial is typical of dry rocky sites in northeastern regions, and its occurrences in the southern Appalachians are only at high elevation (W). It was reported from Ky. by Abbott et al. (2001) on Manchester Island, in the Ohio River (LEWI at BEREA). There have been other reports, but without details (Horton 1972; FNA 5). P.. ciliinode may be confused with the weedy alien, Fallopia convolvulus, and further investigation is needed. The genus Paragonum has been recently revived to include ciliinode plus one other species, in East Asia (Desjardins et al. 2023). Compared to redefined Fallopia, Paragonum differs as follows (W): ocreae have reflexed bristles at base (versus smooth); perianth is white (versus greenish to yellowish or pinkish); and achenes are glossy black (versus glossy or dull black).
