This is widespread in southeastern states, extending north to Wis. and Mass. Several ornamental cultivars have been developed from this species and H. laevis, plus various hybrids. White, pink and red color forms occur in the state. However, red forms are rarely found in the wild, where they may just be escapes from cultivation.
