This northeastern tree is not common but it is widely scattered across Ky. It may have increased after settlement; the earliest record appears to be from Crandall (1876; see also M). Included here as open dots are the historical data of Gm (1913). The species appears to have remained relatively infrequent even during 1910-1940 (Gm, B). There is a oral history among some foresters that increase occurred during salvage of Castanea dentata after the chestnut blight. Hybrids can be expected with tremuloides, alba and perhaps X canescens (FNA 7); 2n = 38 in each species, in general, except that tremuloides can also have 2n = 57 or 76. All three species spread by suckering roots, and young sprouts form leaves that are distinct from those on older stems. Hybrids can be difficult to recognize; see FNA 7 for details. These species all have leaves that flutter distinctly in the wind;
