This is widespread across eastern North America, usually growing in low woods but also occasional on damp uplands. It is locally much more frequent than triphyllum, especially in woodland with a long history of disturbance and more open conditions. Segregates have not been defined until recently by Wyatt et al. (2025); 2n = 28 in more southern plants versus 56 in general across east-central states (FNA 22).
