This species includes the commonly cultivsted butternut squash. These three species also sometimes appear as waifs and may deserve more attention for the overall flora of Ky. Vines of moschata occasionally grow 5-10 m long (or tall into trees), especially on waste ground near old gardens. It has distinctive white flecks in leaves and fruits; also spinose pustulate-based hairs on stems, petioles and veins Other cultivated species may be expected as waifs: C. argyrosperma K. Koch (= C. mixta Pang)., including cushaw squash; and C. maxima Duschesne, including hubbard squash.
