This occurs widely in southeastern states, except in the lower Ohio Valley and central Mississippi Valley; it usually growing in thin woods and brushy openings on dry acid soils. Records in Ky. from west of the Appalachian region and adjacent Knobs are few and unverified: METC (Braun 1943) and MONR (Harvill 1941). A series of four cytologucal races has been reported (W); Ky. plants are probably all hexaploid (2n = 24).
