Ballard et al. (2023) has recently revived the name V. baxteri House for plants of the Great Lakes region and at least the northern Ohio Valley that have been called subsinuata (or "palmata" misapplied). This distinction has not yet been thoroughly applied in Ky,, but Ballard has identified cols. from FRAN andf MERC (presumably at BHO, Athens, Ohio); similar plants may occur in GARR (KY) and JESS (JC). V. baxteri may be distinguished, with some difficulty, from the largely Appalachian subsinuata sensu stricto as follows (W; Ballard et al. 2023): largest blades divided into 9-15 narrowly linear-lanceolate lobes <3 mm wide (versus 7-9 broadly linear or lanceolate lobes >3 mm); the lateral second-order lobes of the terminal primary division attached medially (versus medially or basally); second-order lobes usually with a prominent slender spreading sharply acute tooth or short lobe on each side (versus entire or with 1-2 inconspicuous short appressed or incurved teeth); primary divisions commonly narrowed at base to slender "petiolules" (versus not usually narrowed); foliage and peduncles not purple-tinged (versus often so); seeds ivory, unspotted or occasionally with small weak light brown blotches or streaks (versus light brown with small prominent dark orange-brown streaks, or light to medium gray with small prominent darker gray blotches or streaks). Recently described segregates in the Blue Ridge ("monaconora") and shale barrens region of Va. ("tenuisecta") differ in having glabrous foliage (versus hirsute) and eciliate calices (versus ciltate); see Zumwalde (2015) and Ballard et al. (2023).
