Poaceae <Andropogoneae> Andropogon <Leptopogon> hirsutior (glomeratus var. h., virginicus var. h.)
Andropogon hirsutior (Hack.) Weakley & LeBlond
ALI: no HAB: f-9,10, n/a, C, 5 ABU: g9, s8, -2
This occurs mostly on wet acid soils of the southeastern Coastal Plain, but only east of the Mississippi; and it is generally absent in Appalachian regions (FNA 25, W). It differs from typical glomeratus in its more elongated inflorescence (not obpyramidal), with shorter peduncles (mostly 2-5 cm versus 10-35 cm); see FNA 25 for details. In Ky. two colls. from LAUR (at KY) are clearly referable to this taxon. Other colls. should be searched for under glomeratus and virginicus. Var. hirsutior has been treated under both species and appears to be somewhat intermediate, but W and others have indicated that it is a distinct species. It has recently been reported from sw. Mo. (Thomas 2017), which would be a great disjunction from se. La.; more likely in this region is A. tenuispatheus (glomeratus var. pumilus), as noted under glomeratus.
