See notes under cordifolia; mapping here is not yet attempted pending deeper review. In the treatment of Nesom (2021), wherry is centered on the southern Cumberland Plateau, adjacent Interior Low Plateaus and Ridge & Valley regions, plus extensions south along the Tombigbee Rv. and Chattahoochie Rv. It reportedly differs fro the common variant in Ky., named T. stolonifera Nesom, as follows: plants without herbaceous leafy stolons (versus with such stolons); leaves usually with acute to acuminate lobes (versus usually with with obtuse to rounded lobes), terminal leaf lobes prominently extended (versus not so); sepals 1.5-3 mm long (versus 2.5-3.5 mm long). In Nesom's usage, wherryi in Ky. appears to include some plants previously treated by Lakela as var. austrina. From Nesom's (2021) data and provisional review at APSC by M. Brock (pers. comm) there appear to be colls. fom ravines of the Shawnee Hills and upper Green Rv. (EDMO, HART, ADAI); Cumberland Plateau and ravines of the Cumberland Rv. (CUMB, CLIN, WAYN, PULA, LAUR); and perhaps the upper Kentucky Rv. watershed (POWE, BREA). In contrast, stolonifera appears to occur throughout Appalachian regions of Ky. and in Tenn. it is restricted to northeastern sections; elsewhere it is reported mostly from the central Appalachians to New England (Nesom 2021).
