This is a globally rare biennial concentrated in rocky, base-rich woods of Appalachian regions, but with disjunct localities west to s. Ind. (Harrison Co.), adjacent to the Knobs region of Ky. (D). The species was mapped in Ky. by FNA 7 but no verified colls. from Ky. have been located. There is a recent report from Fort Knox in HARD, based on observations of Oklahoma Nature Preserves staff in 2018 (T. Littlefield, pers. comm.). There are also old reports from FRAN (Wildberger 1880) and BOYL or MERC (Linney 1880, 1882). Some of these reports may have been based on Borodinia shortii; generic assignment has also been uncertain (FNA 7).
