Amaryllidaceae <Narcisseae> [Liliaceae] Narcissus poeticus
Narcissus poeticus L.
ALI: EU HAB: R-10, n/a, D, 3 ABU: n/a, n/a, 5
This is the commonly cultivated "narcissus" of south-central Europe with white tepals and yellowish to red short central tubes. The species is often persistent from old plantings in humid mid-temperate regions of North America, but not as common as pseudonarcissus. In Ky. it is generally impossible to infer whether colls. are of plants established from seedlings. Most escaped plants have relatively small flowers that appear about a month later than pseudonarcissus (usually April-May versus Mar-Apr). These may represent an old cultivar close to the wild type, such as "Actaea" (http://daffseek.org/). Many hybrids and cultivars of Narcissus are grown, but not clearly distinguished here. The colls. mapped as open dots in HENR (KY) and MASO (BEREA) appear to the hybrid with N. tazetta L. (= X medioluteus P. Mill., N. biflorus M.A. Curtis, "jonquil"). They are probably from cultivated plants. N. tazetta itself is a species from southwest Europe (in warmer zones) that is not known to be naturalized here. Hybrids of poeticus with pseudonarcissus (= X incomparibilis P. Mill.) have been reported to persist in JEFF (M, FNA 26). A possible back-cross with pseudonarcissus (perhaps cultivar "White Emperor") is locally abundant in WOOD along US 421.
