See notes under lactea. B. albescens is a poorly understood species that has been confused with lactea (leucantha; alba var. macrophylla). It is not known to be native in Ky., but it was reported from the state without details by BA. It is known from the adjacent Cumberland Plateau in e. Tenn. (Ch, K). Also, it appears to have been included within some "wildflower" plantings under the name "alba". Compared to lactea and alba, albescens has shorter, more divaricate stature, more pubescence, relatively small flowers and small fruit; for details, see Isely 1990; S & W.
