This is largely restricted to marshy openings on the lower Mississippi Alluvial Plain. It has been confused with H. quadrivalvis. Also, hybrids of uniflora and ovata have been reported from some states (Cr), which might be difficult to distinguish from quadrivalvis; 2n = 20 in all three species.
