This is restricted to swampy sites on the southeastern Coastal Plain, and more frequent on fertile soils of the lower Mississippi Valley than on the Atlantic side. But it is locally abundant in these habitats. Leaves alone can be confused with Carpinus caroliniana var. caroliniana; both are ca. 3-8+ cm long x 2-4+ cm wide (FNA 3). Planera leaves differ in their rhombic-ovate to ovate-oblong shape (versus narrowly ovate to oblong-ovate), with base often oblique, and in its unequally serrate margins (versus doubly serrate); twigs are hirtellous when young (versus glabrous).
