Violaceae Viola <Viola> conspersa (labradorica*)
Viola conspersa Reichenb.
ALI: no HAB: 4,5, ::, C, 2 ABU: g9, s8, -1
This occurs mostly in cool temperate regions of northeastern U.S.A. and southeastern Canada, but it extends south is disjunct populations as far as nw. Flo. (K, W). V. conspersa has been combined by Ballard et al. (2023) with V. labradorica Schrank (= V. adunca Sm. var. minor (Hook.) Fern.), which occurs mostly in boreal and alpine regions. Although such treatment has been followed by some authors (e.g. J, W), complete combination has seemed dubious to others (e.g., F, RAB, Cr). V. conspersa has been distinguished (Cr) by its broadly lanceolate (versus lance-linear) stipules, bristly-toothed over half their length (versus less than half), and leaves more or less strongly cordate (versus subtruncate to subcordate). Given the high degree of "splitting" by Ballard al. (2023; W), especially among stemless blue violets (Sect. Boreali-Americanae), it seems odd to subsume consperma completely into labradorica without more publication of morphological or molecular analysis. Could variety or subspecies status be reasonable?
