Variation in this widespread eastern annual may deserve further study across ite range, but only tetraploids (2n = 28) have been reported (FNA 20). Colls. at KY from ANDE, EDMO, FRAN, GARR, MONT and perhaps elsewhere are referable to var. praecox Fern. (as treated in Gnaphalium), which is concentrated on the southeastern Coastal Plain (F). However, that segregate does not now appear to be significant (Nesom 2001b). Colls. should also be rechecked for P. microdenium.
