This robust perennial is widespread in swampy woods and marshes of southeastern states, typically on more fertile soils than macrostachya. Most plants in Ky., but not all, are probably referable to var. interior Fern. (F). However, that taxon is not generally distinguished in recent treatments (FNA 23).
