Allium oleraceum L.
ALI: EU HAB: n/a, n/a, n/a, 5 ABU: n/a, n/a, 0
This wild uncultivated garlic of Europe is rarely adventive in North America; 2n = 32, 40 (FNA 26, K, W). There is a possible coll. from JEFF (Medley #17164 at APSC), but the identification and wild context remain uncertain. Records from HICK (Grubbs 1989), FULT (MU) and elsewhere remain dubious (SERNEC). Good complete colls. are essential for certain identification (W). Leaves are mostly 2-4 mm versus 6-12 mm in sativum. Basal bulbs are generally intermediate in size between ampeloprasum and sativum (ca. 1.2-2 cm x 1-1.5 cm), with one or more cloves (versus compound in sativum), and brown to grayish brown in outer scales (versus white to light brown in sativum). Leaves of ampeloprasum, oleraceum and sativum are flattened or keeled (V-shaped in cross-section), not hollow; leaves of vineale, cepa and schoenoprasum are cylindric (rounded or indented in cross-section), hollow.
