The largely Ozarkian var. patentissimum (Lindl. ex DC.) Nesom is a tetraploid that has been reported from Ky. by several authors (e.g. Cr, FNA 20), but there has been some misidentification (Jones 1983; M). There is at least one coll. that is referable to this taxon: from GRAV, R. Athey #466 (EKY), 19 Sep 1968, Mayfield, end of by-pass on Hwy 45 between highway and railroad, dry banks. Other colls. may be just transitional to typical patens: e.g., from HICK at MUR; and from MCRA by R. Athey #2143 (MO), 20 Sep 1972, Reidland, banks on Kenmar Road. These colls. are all from the Mississippi Embayment.
