Tiliaceae [Malvaceae] Tilia cordata
Tilia cordata L.
ALI: EU HAB: n/a, n/a, n/a, 2 ABU: n/a, n/a, 0
Trees of this widespread Euriopean species, or its hybrid (X europaea L.) with T. platyphyllos Scop. (with larger hairier leaves) are often planted, especially in urban areas. They can easily be confused with native Tilia (e.g. in parks and greenways of FAYE and JEFF). T. cordata and T. platyphyllos differ from T. americana (sensu lato) in their generally smaller leaf blades (mostly 4-12 cm long versus 8-20 cm), and more clearly in the lack of staminodes in their flowers (W). Reports of natualization by cordata or platyphyllos in North America are rare and may need verification (K, W, FNA 6). Another commonly planted alien is T. tomentosa Moench, which is native to sw. Europe and Turkey, with whitish stellate-tomentose lower leaf surfaces and with more resistance to drought; there are no records of naturalization in North America.
