This monotypic genus is concentrated in mesic woods on strongly acid soils of northeastern and Appalachian regions (K); 2n = 14. However, it also occurs in similar disjunct habitats as far west as the Shawnee Hills and the southeastern Coastal Plain (but only east of the Mississippi Rv.).
