This occurs mostly on the Cumberland Plateau, but it also extends east to the Southern Appalachians, and locally west into c. Ky. and c. Tenn. (FNA 23, k). A coll. from HARL (BEREA) suggests hybridization with digitalis, but there may be considerable variation with purpurifera (2n = 34, 36, 38).
