Ruscaceae [Liliaceae**] Convallaria majalis
Convallaria majalis L.
ALI: EU HAB: n/a, n/a, n/a, 2 ABU: n/a, n/a, 0
Although widely grown in Ky. since early settlement, and sometimes escaping near gardens (Gm), this "Lily of the Valley" has not spread significantly over the landscape and there is no clear evidence of seedlings. However, an possibly self-sown patch of Convallaria has been recently discovered in subxeric woods below limestone cliffs in ESTI about a mile from Ravenna; it is hypothesized that these plants mark an old grave. There are also colls. from FAYE and MADI (EKY) that appear to be from persistent plantings; and reports of pseudomajalis from shady roadsides in GRNP (MUHW) and LAWR (MDKY) appear to be based on misidentified majalis (SERNEC May 2020). The genus Convallaria has been widely appreciated due to its complex scents, with may stimulate male mammalian sexual interest (e.g. Ramachanderan & Schaefer 2019). However, berries, leaves and rhizomes are toxic due to diverse cardiac glycosides and steroidal saponins, although some of these compounds may have anti-cancer potential (e.g.Higano et al. 2007).
