This close relative of canadensis has been recognized by several authors as a species or variety in southeastern states (W), extending up the Ohio Valley on sandy soils to se. Mo. (Y), s. Ind. and s. Ohio (K). It is probably more widespread in Ky. than colls. indicate. It is locally abundant in fields and other openings on sandy uplands of MCRE and PULA. C. parva differs from typical canadensis as folllows (W): stem glabrous or with widely scattered, appressed hairs (versus coarsely spreading-hirsute); leaves with a few cilia toward the base (versus distinctly ciliate), generally entire (versus the larger one generally with a few to many coarse teet)h; phyllaries purple-tipped.(versus green-tipped or white-tipped).
