This is widely scattered across southeastern states but uncommon, usually associated with thin woods on sandy soils. It is generally absent on lowlands of the Mississippi Rv., and uncommon to rare in the Ohio Valley, especially west of Appalachian regions (K). It has recently been confirmed in GARR on a scoured terrace of the Dix River (W. Overbeck for EKU). The most western records in Ky. are tentatively identified vegetative colls. by JC from MCLE (Boehler Knob) and WEBS (Rt 132 just N of Tradewater Rv.). C. uniflora is virtually the only species in series Parvliflorae, but it includes triploids and tetraploids (FNA 9). It is distinct from similar species in related series (Viridies, Punctatae, Crus-gallii etc.) as follows (FNA 9, W): sepals glanular-pectinate, foliaceous, equaling petals (versus shorter) and persistent on fruits; flowers 1-3(5) per inflorescence (versus 3-15}; leaves coriaceous, without deep lobes, the serrations obtuse or dentate (versus acute or finely crenate-serrulate); thorns relatively numerous, ca. 1 mm thick (versus 1.5-3 mm thick). Hybrids are unknown in Ky.
