This taxon has not been reported from Ky. but is expected in western regions; it is known from "Dry soil, Ala. to Tex., north to s. Ind., s. Ill., s. Mo. and Okl." (F). Although generally combined with hirta and serotina for over 50 years, bicolor may also deserve species status (F, Ladd & Thomas 2015, Thomas 2017). It has been distinguished as follows (F): plants annual (versus annual to short-lived perennial), without basal tufts (versus with basal tufts of relatively long leaves), cauline leaves mostly uniform, oblong to narrowly obovate, obtuse (versus decreasing in size upward, usually acute to acuminate). Thomas (2017) reported that it is abundant on a sandstone glade of high quality in St. Clair Co., Mo., together with several rare species.
