This diploid (2n = 28) is widespread in flowing or stagnant waters of cool temperate regions across North America and elsewhere around the World. It is the most common narrow-leaved species of Potamogeton in Ky. Colls. from BULL, HART, KENT and OLDH are referable to var. macellus Fern, but that taxon is not generally recognized in recent treatments.
