Hydrangeaceae [Saxifragaceae] Philadelphus inodorus (grandiflorus)
Philadelphus inodorus L.
ALI: no HAB: n/a, n/a, n/a, n/a ABU: n/a, n/a, 0
This occurs from the southern Appalachians of Tenn. and Va. to the Coastal Plain of Ala. and Fla. Although reported as native to Ky. by several authors, most or all records appear based on plants persistent or escaped from cultivation, or based on misidentified intectus or coronarius. Hu (1954-55) did not list any wild colls. from Ky.; a coll. of B from CUMB (GH) was initially det. as inodorus but later by Hu as intectus; a coll. from PULA (MO) was initially det. by Hu as P. inodorus var. grandiflorus (Willd.) Gray. There are reported colls. from FRAN (EKY), JEFF (DHL), LEE (EKY) and SCOT (US), but these are not mapped here since they are almost certainly from plantings or escapes; some records from w. Tenn. also result from cultivation (Ch; see APSC). Compared to other North American species, inodorus has more stamens (ca. 60-90 versus 20-50); larger flowers (petals ca. 15-25 mm long versus 5-15 mm); typically 1-3 flowers per inflorescence (versus 3-9); and silvery reddish-brown outer bark peeling in strips (versus dull greyish, more persistent or cracking into smaller plates in intectus and pubescens).
